Simply calling Curtis Harding a “soul man” feels reductive. The singer-songwriter/drummer/guitarist/producer’s definition of “soul” is broad—soul is the essence, not the form. Coming up in Atlanta, he found soul in the city’s punk scene, he found it at rap shows, he heard it on Bob Dylan records, and he found kinship with people who heard it the same way. After growing up with a gospel-singing mother and amateur rapper sister, Harding himself became a songwriter and backup singer for CeeLo Green. He released his first solo album in 2014, and is currently still touring the follow-up, 2017’s Face Your Fear, which was named one of the year’s Top 20 R&B albums by Rolling Stone magazine. Yes, his music is undoubtedly soulful and his songwriting is both evocative and provocative, but there’s more to his music than the stock imagery the “soul” label conjures. Harding’s voice conveys pain, pleasure, longing, tenderness, sadness, and strength—a full gamut of emotions. He blends soul with gospel, blues, rock, and psychedelia, exuding passion and intensity in his live performances.
