The Afro-Cuban All Stars is a unique orchestra devoted to promoting the full range of Cuban music, one that embraces several generations and all musical styles. The genesis of the group has its roots in the early 1990s, and over the years, many of the band’s rotating cast of musicians have become international stars, including brilliant performers such as Ibrahim Ferrer, Rubén González, Felix Baloy, Pio Leiva, Guillermo Rubalcava, and Manuel “The Guajiro” Mirabal. You may be familiar with the group’s name—the Afro-Cuban All Stars are the same big band that can be seen in those distinct performances captured in the famous Oscar-nominated Buena Vista Social Club documentary by Wim Wenders; its sequel, Buena Vista Social Club: Adios, by Lucy Walker; and the Tony Knox documentary Salon of Dreams. Their Grammy-nominated album A Toda Cuba le Gusta kicked off a series of “Buena Vista” recordings featuring All Stars musicians in 1996, followed by Buena Vista Social Club and Introducing…Rubén González. Described as “classy, cool, and easygoing” (The Guardian) and as music that “will definitely put you in the mood for sunshine” (The Big Issue), the Afro-Cuban All Stars are a band not to be missed this summer.
