The 1719 Hans Herr House & Museum encompasses three historic farmhouses built by Herr descendants spanning more than 175 years of early Lancaster County history. The 1719 Herr House is the cornerstone of the Museum, with its Swiss German medieval architecture, its rich heritage of Anabaptist life and faith, and its importance to the foundation of Lancaster County. The 1835 Shaub House and the 1895 Huber House contribute to the continuing story and presence of the Herr family. Each house offers a unique look at architectural styles, methods of farming, and the impact technological advances made in daily farm life.

Groups are given a guided tour of the 1719 Herr House by a trained and knowledgeable docent. Tours include information on who the Mennonite are, why they settled here, building techniques of the 1719 House, explanation of the floor plan, food preservation methods, plus much more. Tours can be tailored to each group's needs: architecture, gardening, colonial life, Anabaptist faith and practice, farming practices, etc. Please request more information about specific tour topics. Tours last approximately one to one and a half hours.

Groups may enjoy self-guided tours of the many other buildings and exhibits on our spacious 11-acre property; the three-sided frontier log cabin (an example of the type of structure the Herrs may have first built to provide shelter until a log house could be built), blacksmith shop, bake oven, smoke house, the Faith & Furrow exhibit hall, creamery, pump house, and the Agricultural Implement Shed. Visitors are welcome to enjoy their lunch at one of our picnic tables or eat lunch sitting among the 30 antique variety fruit and nut trees in our orchard.

Groups over 30 are asked to register two weeks prior to their visit. All bus drivers receive complimentary entrance to the 1719 Hans Herr House & Museum.

Come learn about our rich heritage because Lancaster County started here!
