With a history spanning more than two centuries, Franklin & Marshall College takes more than a little pride in its place among the top colleges and universities in America.
Founded in 1787, Franklin & Marshall is the 17th oldest college in the nation, and is named for Founding Father Benjamin Franklin and former U.S. Chief Justice John Marshall. A residential college dedicated to excellence in liberal education, its aims are to inspire in young people of high promise and diverse backgrounds a genuine and enduring love of learning. Approximately 2,000 students are enrolled in the College's 40 academic disciplines.
The College is also a center for the cultural arts, and offers a wide variety of public events, including theater, dance, film, art exhibits, concerts, and lectures. The campus, itself, is also a destination - portions have been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, and the entire campus has been designated as the Caroline Steinman Nunan Arboretum.
Famous alumni include actors Treat Williams and Roy Scheider, former president of the United Negro College Fund William H. Gray III, and Patricia E. Harris, first deputy mayor of New York City.
