After the long winter, the spring awakening is a welcomed site in Lancaster County. When the trees start sprouting their new leaves, the PA Dutch Country landscape becomes dotted with bikers taking in the warmer weather, fresh smells and beautiful sites. Covered Bridges are a hallmark of our local heritage and landmark of our community, and can be seen throughout most parts of the region. We’ve put together a biking tour of covered bridges in Lancaster County, complete with recommended routes, rentals and reservations for dinner.
Contrary to what the name suggests, Amish Mud Sales are not run by the Lancaster County Amish. They are actually outdoor auctions and sales set up to benefit our local fire companies. They get their name from the messy conditions that sometimes result from the thawing spring ground. You’ll see plenty of locals (including the Amish) looking for bargains on everything from hand-made quilts and furniture to buggies and lawn equipment.
Lancaster County is home to several prime locations to view bald eagles, including Brunner Island and Holtwood. The Holtwood Environmental Preserve, located on both shores of the lower Susquehanna River, provides more than 5,000 acres of lakeside recreational opportunities and facilities for camping, hiking, boating, sightseeing, fishing and hunting. March typically begins with daytime temperatures in the high 40s, but gradually increase throughout the month, usually reaching 60 degrees by the end of the month. April begins in the low 60s, usually reaching 70s by the end of the month. May begins in the low 70s and ends in the high 70s. Evenings can be brisk, and overnight temperatures can drop into the high 20s in March, and around 40s in April and early May, and into the high 50s in late May.
Appropriate clothing for travelers in March is long pants and a warmer jacket both during the day and evening. For April and May it’s long pants and a light jacket during the day, with a warmer jacket required for late evenings.
Lancaster County sees average amounts of precipitation for the Northeast. In springtime, the average rainfall is 3.4” per month. Light to moderate rain is most likely in the end of April and into May.
