Come take a guided tour of the iron blast furnace complex remains located along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail. Departing from Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, the group will learn about the St. Charles, Henry Clay, and Chickies furnaces and see an authentic iron salamander on the southern end of the trail. In Marietta, where the furnaces were built between 1847-1849, the furnaces surround the Musselman-Vesta Iron Furnace Center, the learning center for the iron, canal, and railroad industries during the late 1800s and early 1900s. At the end your ride, get a guided walking tour of the center and nearby remains from the blast furnace industry. features many exhibits and a diorama depicting the Vesta blast furnace. The Iron Center building is the last remaining structure of the anthracite-fired blast furnace industry in the area. The center is managed by Rivertownes PA USA, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to cultivate art, heritage, and recreation of the river towns of Columbia, Marietta, and Wrightsville. Proceeds benefit Rivertownes PA USA and Susquehanna Heritage. Bicycle rentals are available for an additional fee, call to reserve.
