Contemporary Cityscapes: Today’s Lancaster Landscape

Event Details

Feb 29 - Mar 01

The annual Demuth Invitational exhibition will encourage local, contemporary artists to explore and interpret the 21st century Lancaster cityscape through their own style. Over 40 artists are participating in the 2020 show.Charles Demuth was among some of the first American artists to depict the urban environment of the early 20th century through a modern lens. His iconic Precisionist paintings feature his hometown’s smokestacks, grain elevators, water towers, steeples, and abundant brick buildings. Instead of bustling markets and streets lined with horses and trolleys, these new cityscapes focused on architectural elements where shape and form take precedence. Over the last 20 years, Lancaster City has experienced many changes, as new development resides among 200+ year-old brick structures. Many neighborhoods are seeing revitalization and communities are changing. The interpretation of urban environments, past and present, will be an underlying current for our 2020 exhibitions with two other exhibitions focusing on aspects of this theme.
