Lancaster Fringe Fest
May 21, 2026 to May 24, 2026
The Lancaster Fringe Festival is a new nonprofit organizing a four-day inaugural festival in Lancaster, Pennsylvania in May 2026. Our mission is to bring together a community of creators inspired to share their stories through theater, music, and art that highlights human connection in new and exciting ways. There are many fringe festivals across the world. What we offer is a model for developing artistic expression in our community, not just platforming established performers. Our organization serves the community by gathering arts practitioners, developing and refining their work, and providing opportunities to share it.
Our vision is to animate downtown Lancaster with indoor and outdoor performances. There is a central square where street performers can bring attention to nearby galleries and nightlife venues. Lancaster also has an arts college and outdoor parks close to the central square. We have encouraged productions in spaces that further an artistic vision and engage the community in the experience. Our plan is to make this an annual event, starting with a scale of about 40 productions in about 20 venues. We will also provide opportunities to assist participating artists with developing their performances. We plan to offer each artist one to four workshops for developing their pieces during the months before the festival. Artists submit their scripts or ideas to our production team, which will meet to give a reading or rough performance of the piece. Feedback will come from theatre professionals and established artists in the community. Additionally, the festival will have networking events for artists, supporting local and regional connections through the festival.
Our first festival will be in downtown Lancaster, but we plan to expand into all quadrants of the city in subsequent years to further our goal of representing the community and providing access to the arts. We picture creating fringe hubs in neighborhoods outside of downtown where outlets are provided by various community organizations, such as Boys and Girls Clubs, churches, radio stations, cultural centers, and local businesses. Currently, artists from throughout the city are involved in developing the festival. In this first year, we hope to encourage interest from neighborhoods by modeling how informal venues allow for interactions between artists and spectators, developing new connections.
Our funding model presents a low barrier for our community to experience the festival. We plan to charge audience members $10 to receive a bracelet that would allow them to enter all venues and see any production throughout the festival. They can then “pay what they decide” after each show they experience, with these proceeds being divided among all artists in the festival. Hopefully, this model will pay the artists adequately for their work.
Lancaster has not yet embarked on a fringe festival. We have assembled a robust team of artists, writers, producers, technicians, publicists, educators, and aficionados eager to bring this vision to life. We hold monthly community forums to give artists, venues and interested community members a chance to contribute to and learn about the stages of our work. We see great potential and benefit from bringing together our local and regional artists for the greater community to experience.
