Women Composers with Ulysses Quartet

Event Details

Jun 30

Child prodigy Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) started composing in her teens

and became famous on three continents. Living composer Joan Tower

(b. 1938) received the 2003 Lancaster Symphony Orchestra Composer’s Award. French

composer Germaine Tailleferre (1892-1983) changed her last name as a young woman

to spite her father, who had refused to support her musical studies. She fled France at the outbreak of WWII, leaving behind a lifetime of her compositions. And dear Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847) was not given the same opportunities as her famous brother Felix. Some of her works were even published under her brother’s name because her family had reservations about the roles of women at that time. It is time to celebrate

these four women composers and listen to what perseverance against all odds sounds like! $25/$16
