This class will open with a brief study of the socio-political background in Bronze Age India (late 2nd millennium BCE), largely through analysis of a few foundational texts of the period. Led by Samuel Schindler, the workshop will then explore how Buddhism developed in the 1st millennium BCE in India as a reaction to (and adaptation of) the basic principles of Hindu theology and practice, including karma, dharma and nirvana. No prior experience with subject matter necessary—this will be a safe space for all to learn.
