Lancaster County is the Garden Spot of America, and nowhere else is that more evident than at our farmers’ markets. The foods are picked-that-day fresh, conversations are neighborly, and the character is undeniably welcoming.
It’s that same character that flows through the towns that these markets call home - Lancaster, Bird-in-Hand, Columbia, Ephrata, Manheim, and Lititz. They’re the Market Towns that offer a truly fresh taste of all Pennsylvania Dutch Country has to offer.
Lancaster is America's oldest inland city, leading itself to be the original and biggest market town on this list.
Did you know that Lancaster was our nation's capital for a day in 1777?
Established in 1730, Lancaster Central Market is the nation's oldest continuously-operating farmers’ market. Today, housed in a magnificent 1889 Victorian gem, Central Market (open Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays) offers locals and visitors the opportunity to buy everything from fresh-from-the-farm meats and produce to locally made artisan cheeses, delectable desserts, and even creations made from special family recipes from around the world.
Outside of Lancaster city is our Amish farmland. Travel along Route 340 to see beautiful scenery until you reach the quaint village of Bird-in-Hand, a popular place for travelers.
The village was established in the 1700s, and served as a rest stop for travelers heading west.
Bringing the village together, Bird-in-Hand Farmers Market offers hand-rolled Pennsylvania Dutch pretzels, fresh produce, local crafts, and a countless supply of those colorful Pennsylvania Dutch jams and jellies.
Sample the day away on homemade fudge, smoked meats, or Pennsylvania Dutch funnel cake as you rub shoulders with local Amish farmers offering the harvest of farms just down the road.
Ephrata also became home to America's first communal religious society, the Ephrata Cloister, which is still a popular historical destination today. This national landmark attracts many visitors with its unique architecture, original music, remarkable art, and more.
Ephrata is also home to one of the largest farmers' markets in the country, Green Dragon Farmers Market & Auction. Open every Friday since 1932, more than 400 growers, merchants and craftsmen.
“If you can’t find it at the Green Dragon, it chust ain’t fer sale!”
Only open on Fridays, Green Dragon features tons of Amish-made items, baked goods, books, candy, collectibles, quilts, toys, jewelry, and so much more, and is a great way to support local businesses and experience that tight-knit community feel that Lancaster County boasts.
The important location along the Susquehanna has had a great impact on its history. The town served as a major transportation hub for those traveling along land, rail, and river routes to other destinations.
Established in 1869, Columbia Market House was constructed in 1869 as a large open interior space for vendors to sell fresh produce, and specialty foods, and shop unique, hand-made items
Prior to the building being established, in 1836, the site hosted seven jail cells. The cells still exist today in their orginal form offering visitors a paranormal visit.
Founded in 1762 by Henry William Stiegel, Manheim was a safe haven during the Revolutionary War for the families of Colonial Patriots Robert Morris, the great Financier, Dr. Joseph Shippen, Surgeon General of the Continental Army and General Richard Bache, the Colonial Postmaster General and husband of Benjamin Franklin’s daughter.
Named after Mannheim, Germany and best known for Stiegel Glassworks.
Roots Country Market and Auction is open year-round on Tuesdays only. Like Green Dragon Farmers Market, it is a weekly tradition for many of the locals. Roots features a produce auction as well as fresh meats, bakery items, handmade crafts, flowers, antiques and collectibles from over 200 stand holders.
