Historic Rock Ford's America250 Lecture Series welcomes Justin Cherry of Half Crown Bakehouse as he presents a lecture on “The Bakers of Washington's Army During the American Revolution.”
This presentation will begin at 6 PM in the Langmuir Education Room located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. Admission is for the lecture only and does not include the Snyder Gallery or Hand Mansion.
About the Presenter: Justin Cherry is a professional chef, historical baker, and the owner of Half Crown Bakehouse, a mobile operation based in Charleston, South Carolina. A lifelong living history enthusiast, Cherry combined his culinary expertise with a passion for 18th-century foodways to revive traditional baking methods using heritage and landrace grains.
In 2019, his dedication to historical accuracy earned him a research fellowship at George Washington’s Mount Vernon, where he now serves as the Resident Baker. He is notably the first American to become a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Bakers in London, one of the city's oldest livery companies. Traveling the East Coast with a custom-built, 6,000-pound mobile clay oven, Cherry educates the public by recreating period-correct breads and dishes at historic sites and reenactments. He is a Fellow of the Presidential Library of George Washington at Mount Vernon, The Society of Cincinnati and The American Philosophical Society.
